With what hospitals is Hudson Valley Neurology affiliated?
For the convenience of our patients, the physicians at Hudson Valley Neurology admit patients to St. Francis Hospital and Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Both of these facilities are located in Poughkeepsie, NY.
What is an EEG?
Electroencephalogram (EEG): A diagnostic test of brain electrical activity; helpful in diagnosing epilepsy.
What is an EMG?
Electromyography (EMG): EMG testing is usually done on patients with symptoms of weakness and who, during an examination, are found to have decreased muscle strength. This testing is valuable in that it helps to differentiate between muscle weakness that is caused by neurological conditions and weakness caused by primary muscle conditions.
Electromyography is testing that is done to measure muscle response to nervous system stimulation. During testing, a needle electrode is inserted through the skin into the muscle. The electrode detects electrical activity that is then displayed on an oscilloscope. Several electrodes may need to be placed at various locations in order to obtain an accurate study. After the electrode is in place, the muscle will need to be contracted (for example, bending the arm or leg). A waveform can then be seen on the screen of the oscilloscope that gives information about the ability of the muscle to respond to nervous system stimulation.
What is Neurological Psychological testing?
A series of Neuro Psychological testing is offered to assess and evaluate a patientâs cognitive abilities, memory and motor skills.
What is Neurotrax testing?
Hudson Valley Neurology offers neurologic cognitive testing in order to assist in the early detection of memory disorders and dementia-related diseases. This information is important, in that it enables quicker and more accurate diagnoses, and directs treatment plans.
The evaluation of cognitive function gives our doctors information on the effects of neurologic disease and aging on that patientâs brain. This testing is covered by most insurance plans.
With this testing, we are also able to track the patientâs response to medical, surgical or rehabilitative therapies. This information is shared with your primary care physician, in order to further specify the treatment plan.

What is a Carotid Ultrasound?
Carotid Ultrasound is a test that shows the carotid arteries (the vessels in the neck that provide blood flow to the brain). It also shows how much blood flows through the carotid arteries, and the rate of flow. Ultrasound technology (the same imaging used in pregnant women to visualize the fetus), is used to make an image of the arteries. This information can be used to find out if there is an abnormality or blockage in the carotid arteries that could lead to stroke. This test can also be used to investigate the carotid arteries for several other reasons.
What is a Tysabri Infusion?
Tysabri (Natalizumab) is a newly approved humanized monoclonal antibody medication for the treatment of Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). The approval was based on results from clinical trials in which Tysabri reduced the rate of clinical relapses by up to 66% and reduced the development of new or newly enlarging MRI-detected brain lesions. A greater proportion of those on therapy remained relapse-free as compared to controls.
At our infusion center, Tysabri is infused by vein, once a month. It is infused by a specially trained and certified infusion nurse and physician.
At Hudson Valley Neurology, we were given the honor of being the first medical office to deliver Tysabri in the northeast. Another unique feature is that we are the only prescribing doctorâs office offering Tysabri infusions. Most patients are required to go to infusion centers. Our clinic offers one on one nursing. At Hudson Valley Neurology, the prescribing doctor is always present during the infusion. All of these features are done to ensure the safest and most pleasant experience for our patients.
What is Genetic Counseling?
Hudson Valley Neurology offers education and guidance by professional advisors in order to help people make informed decisions based on genetic knowledge. What is the Botox Clinic?
Most people have heard about Botox being used to treat wrinkles. Botox was first used in the 1970's to treat strabismus (lazy eye) in children. The strong muscle would be injected with Botox, in order to weaken it. It would thereby match the weak muscle, and correct the eye. Over the past thirty years, Botox has been proven to be safe and has found many uses.
At our Botox clinic, we treat the various forms of dystonia (such as spasmodic torticollis, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm). We also use Botox to treat the spasticity (stiffness) that occurs after stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury.
Most treatments take about fifteen minutes. The smallest possible needles are used, making it an almost painless procedure. Treatments usually last three to four months. These procedures are covered by most insurance plans.
At Hudson Valley Neurology, our Botox Clinic is run by a Board Certified neurologist; Dr. Azher. This physician is an expert in the use of Botox, and is fellowship trained in movement disorders.
What is psychological counseling?
Psychological counseling is an evaluation and counseling administered by licensed clinical psychologist to help patients become more aware of emotions and how to handle them.
What services do you provide for ADHD?
